The Power to Become

• By Gideon Adegunle

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.
John 1:12 (KJV)

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2 Peter 1:3–4 (KJV)

What does “power to become” really mean?
Let’s read carefully and learn more.

The power to become refers to the divine enablement or supernatural capacity that God gives a person to step into a new identity, assignment, or level of life that they could not attain or live out by their own strength.

Power to Live Fully in God’s Design

The power to become is not merely about stepping into a new or elevated status. It is about living fully and fruitfully in the higher life God designed for His creation. It is the ability to grow, increase, and fully express divine potential.

When God blessed His creation in Genesis 1:22, He wasn’t wishing. He released power through His Word. That blessing was an activation, a spiritual force that enabled everything He created to become fruitful and multiply. His spoken Word imparted capacity to expand, reproduce, and fulfill divine purpose.

Creation itself reflects this truth. From the stars to the animals, to mankind and even angelic beings, we see the principle of becoming more through divine empowerment. Everything God made carries the potential for increase.

As believers, we have been entrusted with the highest dimension of this power, the power to become sons of God and joint-heirs with Christ. This is not just a future hope, but a present reality. Through Christ, we are called to live in the fullness of God’s design, empowered to grow, to reign, and to express His life in every sphere.

The Possibilities of the Power to Become

The Orchestrator of the Power to Become in the New Testament

In the New Testament, both angels and men believed that God’s work of creation had ended. They assumed that nothing new could ever be created, like King Solomon once declared:

There is nothing new under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 1:9

However, the resurrection of Jesus changed everything. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in the story of man’s creation.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
2 Corinthians 5:17

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus brought about a transformation that enabled man to partake in the divine nature of God.

His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature.
2 Peter 1:3–4

The power to become is not just about change or improvement. It is about receiving the very nature of God.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.
John 1:12 (KJV)

This power was given so that men could be conformed to the image and likeness of Christ:

For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.
Romans 8:29

Power to Multiply and Be Fruitful

  • As Christians, we multiply through reconciliation:

All things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.
    2 Corinthians 5:18 (KJV)

  • We become fruitful by walking in the nature and giftings of the Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are evidence of this fruitfulness:

    Galatians 5:22–23

  • Christ, the firstborn from the dead, had to die as a seed so that sons and daughters could be multiplied in the realm of the Spirit:

Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
    John 12:24

His death made it possible for many to be born into the family of God.
