Hope Against Hope

• By Gideon Adegunle

“Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.”
– Romans 4:18 (KJV)

Introduction

Every promise of God is like a seed.
A seed begins its journey by first dying, and in due time, it springs back to life stronger, more potent, and perfectly positioned to fulfill its purpose.

Similarly, hope works hand in hand with God’s promises. Yet, our hope in Christ should not rest merely on the promise itself, but on the faithfulness of the One who made the promise.

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”
– Hebrews 10:23

The season of waiting for God’s promise to manifest often becomes the proving ground of our trust.

Faith, Hope, and Love – The Eternal Virtues

The Bible teaches that faith, hope, and love are eternal virtues that endure forever (1 Corinthians 13:13).

  • Faith empowers us to trust in God’s promises.
  • Hope anchors us in the assurance of His faithfulness.
  • Love sustains and activates both.

“Hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” – Romans 5:5

Our love for Christ and others is tested by where our hope truly lies.

Biblical Examples of Hope Tested and Proven

1. The Children of Israel Hope in the Wilderness

The Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land shows how easily hope can waver in hardship.
Despite witnessing God’s power, they often complained about food and water (Exodus 16:2-3; Numbers 20:2-5), revealing a misplaced hope in comfort rather than in God’s promise.

Yet, those who anchored their hope in God’s word like Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised Land (Numbers 14:6–9, 30).
Their story reminds us: God’s promises may delay, but they never fail.

2. The Apostles Hope Amid Persecution

The apostles’ love and hope in Christ were tested through severe trials. Paul endured beatings, shipwrecks, imprisonment, and rejection, yet declared:

“We rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” – Romans 5:2

Their hope in eternal life and resurrection gave them strength to endure (2 Corinthians 4:17–18).
True hope thrives under pressure.

3. Job Hope Through Suffering

Job’s story is one of hope refined by fire.
When stripped of wealth, health, and family, Job declared:

“Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.” – Job 13:15

His faith and hope in God’s character enabled him to endure unimaginable pain. In the end, God restored him and blessed him even more abundantly (Job 42:10-17).

Hope in God never dies it resurrects stronger.

4. Abraham The Father of Faith

Abraham exemplified hope that defies logic.
Though his body was as good as dead and Sarah’s womb barren, he “hoped against hope” for God’s promise of a son (Romans 4:18–21).

What strengthens faith is not the absence of impossibility but the presence of unshakable hope in God’s faithfulness.
Even when asked to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham trusted that God would still keep His word (Genesis 22:1-12).

Hope in God is the anchor of unwavering obedience.

5. Jesus Christ The Ultimate Example

Jesus embodied perfect love and hope in the Father.
In Gethsemane, His soul was overwhelmed with sorrow, yet He prayed:

“Not My will, but Yours be done.”  Matthew 26:39

Through the agony of the cross, Jesus’ hope in the Father’s redemptive plan never faltered.
His resurrection became the eternal proof that hope in God leads to life, not loss (Hebrews 12:2).

Indicators of Where Our Hope Truly Lies

  1. Our Priorities
  2. Our Worship and Devotion
  3. How We Handle Success
  4. Our Prayer Life
  5. Our Words and Confessions
  6. Our Reactions in Difficult Times
  7. Our Actions and Decisions
  8. Our Patience and Endurance
  9. Our Joy and Peace

Each of these reflects whether our hope is anchored in God’s faithfulness or in the fleeting things of life.

Conclusion

Hope that is not inspired by the love of God will eventually fail.
But when our love is rooted in faith, and our hope rests in His promises, we emerge stronger, wiser, and aligned with His divine purpose.

“Hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.”
– Romans 5:5

Let your hope live beyond circumstances, anchored in the unchanging nature of God.
No matter what dies around you, hope in Christ resurrects everything meant for your destiny.

Stay blessed, steadfast, and edified!

Mortal Men: Living With Eternity in Mind

Mortality feels like a curse. Our bodies weaken, our days expire, opportunities close, and life ends whether we are ready or not. How can beings with eternity in their hearts be trapped in fading bodies? Biblically, mortality is not the curse itself but death is the curse of sin. But for the believer, mortality now serves a redemptive purpose
